Honest Rankings in Three Simple Steps

We take the complexity out of choosing a search engine. Here is exactly how our process works:

1

We Search

Our team runs identical queries across every tool in a category — the same keywords, the same intent, the same day — so comparisons are truly apples-to-apples.

2

We Score

Each engine is rated on relevance, speed, freshness, UI clarity, privacy, and category-specific criteria. Scores are weighted and averaged into a single 0–10 rating.

3

We Publish

Results go live in clear, visual comparison tables. Rankings are refreshed every month, and every methodology note is public so you can verify our work.

Built on Independence. Backed by Data.

No Pay-to-Play Rankings

Search engines cannot pay to improve their position. Our rankings are based on test results, period. We clearly label any affiliate relationships and they never influence scores.

Transparent Methodology

Every comparison page includes a detailed scoring breakdown. We publish our testing criteria, weighting system, and raw data so you can audit our conclusions yourself.

Monthly Retesting

Search engines evolve fast. We rerun our full test suite every month and update rankings accordingly, so what you see is always current.

Category Expertise

Each comparison is built by researchers who specialize in that vertical. Our travel search reviewers are frequent travelers; our code search reviewers are working developers.

The Story Behind SearchCompared

SearchCompared started with a simple frustration: every time we needed to search for something outside of Google — a cheap flight, a code snippet, an academic paper, a product review we could trust — we had no reliable way to know which search engine was actually the best for that specific task.

So we built the resource we wished existed. SearchCompared is an independent review platform that tests, scores, and compares search engines and discovery tools across 40 specialized categories. We are a small, focused editorial team with backgrounds in SEO, product research, data journalism, and software engineering.

Our mission is straightforward: help people find the right search tool for the right job, backed by transparent data instead of marketing hype. In an era where AI is reshaping how information is retrieved, having a trusted, neutral guide matters more than ever.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you test search engines?
We run a standardized set of queries per category, then score each engine on relevance, speed, freshness of results, user interface, and privacy practices. Category-specific criteria are added where appropriate (e.g., citation accuracy for academic search, price coverage for shopping search). Full methodology is published on each comparison page.
Are your rankings sponsored or paid?
No. Search engines cannot pay for a higher ranking. We do earn revenue through clearly disclosed affiliate links and optional sponsored placements, but these never affect our scores or positions.
How often are comparisons updated?
Every comparison is fully retested and refreshed on a monthly cycle. If a major product update happens mid-cycle (e.g., a search engine launches a significant new feature), we may publish an interim update.
What does “best” actually mean in your rankings?
It means the highest composite score in our testing for that specific category. “Best” for code search is very different from “best” for travel search. We always define the criteria at the top of each comparison page so you know exactly what was measured.
Can I suggest a new category or search engine?
Absolutely. We are always expanding. Use the “Suggest a Category” form in the footer or email us at [email protected]. Community feedback directly shapes our roadmap.
Is SearchCompared free to use?
Yes, 100%. All comparisons, scores, and methodology notes are free and accessible without an account. We may introduce optional premium features in the future, but core comparison content will always be free.
