Our Testing Methodology

Every score we publish is backed by structured, repeatable testing. Here's exactly how we evaluate search engines across all 40 categories.

Overview

Our testing process is designed to produce scores that reflect real-world performance for the typical user in each category — not synthetic benchmarks or lab conditions. Each platform is evaluated independently by at least two reviewers, and scores are reconciled before publication.

We test each platform with a standardized set of tasks relevant to its category, rate performance on five weighted criteria, and combine scores into a single 0–10 rating. All testing is conducted on production platforms — no beta or demo environments.

Scoring Criteria

All platforms are scored across five core criteria. The weighting may shift slightly depending on the category, but the factors remain consistent.

25%

Result Quality

Relevance, accuracy, and completeness of search results for category-specific tasks.

25%

Feature Depth

Availability of advanced filters, sorting, export options, and tools unique to the category.

20%

Ease of Use

Learning curve, interface clarity, search speed, and mobile/desktop consistency.

20%

Data Freshness

How current the index is, frequency of updates, and availability of recent content.

10%

Pricing Value

Whether free tiers are useful, and whether paid plans deliver proportionate value.

Testing Process

1

Task Design

We design 15–30 standardized search tasks per category, modeled on real user needs gathered from forums and use-case research.

2

Independent Testing

Two reviewers complete all tasks independently using identical device configurations and fresh browser profiles.

3

Score Reconciliation

Where scores diverge by more than one point, a third reviewer provides a tiebreaker assessment.

4

Weighted Calculation

Criterion scores are combined using category-adjusted weights into a final 0–10 rating.

5

Editorial Review

A senior editor reviews scores and content for accuracy before publication. Reviews are date-stamped and flagged for re-testing.
